EXTRAORDINARY CREATION: THE PLATE AND POT DANCE

This dance item has been performed in the Bharatanatyam style by the great dance maestro, the Late Shri E Krishna Iyer, in the year 1926. Shri Varadachary, a well-known Sanskrit scholar, after witnessing this dance item, made reference to the Manusmriti where it is said that Lord Krishna created the 'Liquid' element first, (the Plate is considered this "Liquid' element), energized it and then created the entire Cosmos (Here the Earthen Pot is considered the Cosmos). Then Lord Krishna enjoys his Own Creation and blesses it too. This Plate and Pot Dance was revived by the Gurus of Sri Rama Nataka Niketan in 1965 and it is now acclaimed as an extraordinary choreographic work of theirs.

Apart from solo items like Varnam, Javali, Swarajathi, etc., Manjula has also choreographed major dance-dramas in the Bharatanatyam style. Some of her important works are listed below.

  1. SRI KRISHNA LEELA
  2. GODHA KALYANAM
  3. SRI RAMA TAPO VANADHI GAMANAM
  4. MOHINI BHASMASURA
  5. SEETA PARINAYAM
  6. SRI RAMADASA CHARITAMRUTHAM
  7. CHATURVIDHA NRITYAVALI (In four classical dance styles ---Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Odissi & Kathak
  8. DEVI VAIBHAVAM

Forty-eight of Manjula Ramaswamy's students participated in the competition for the Limca Book of World Records in December 2009, by dancing for an hour on clay pots.
